God named Ishmael ‘God hears’ before he was born. Years later, God heard Ishmael’s cry when he was perishing in the wilderness and opened his mother’s eyes to see a spring of water from which she gave him drink – and he lived!
Islam claims Ishmael as a spiritual forefather. Today’s Muslims are in the wilderness perishing and crying out for living water. Let the Church pray to the Father to reveal the well of living water, Jesus, so they might live!
Glorious and free!
Sunday evening, when Muslims were celebrating the end of Ramadan with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, my husband and I had dinner with a couple who used to be Muslim and began following Jesus in Canada. Out of nowhere, the husband said, “Canada is heaven”. It caught us by surprise, because we’d just been talking about the difficulties of learning English and finding work here. But they’re both refugees, and compared to what they’ve known, Canada is glorious and free.
Canada has been a heaven of sorts, and a haven, for successive waves of immigrants (although its first peoples lost freedom as others gained theirs). Could it be that a significant reason for Canada’s appeal as “glorious and free” is that in 1864 Sir Samuel Tilley believed Canada should be a nation under God and exhorted our founding fathers to name the nascent nation the Dominion of Canada after Psalm 72:8?
He shall have dominion from sea to sea….
Canada’s motto became “From sea to sea”, and the verse was carved into Parliament’s Peace Tower in 1921.
The last two lines of our national anthem say,
God keep our land glorious and free
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
When we sing it, we celebrate a partnership. We’re essentially invoking God to keep our land while declaring we are doing our part by standing on guard.
In last week’s GHPL, I noted, “a sound principle of spiritual warfare is to defend what is ours, what God in His goodness has given us and with which we are to bless our communities, our nation and the world.” As we approach Canada’s 150th birthday on July 1, let’s think about what we have been given, for the purpose of blessing ourselves and others, that is under attack and needs defending. I suggest that freedom of speech is of high priority and that it's closely related to freedom of worship.
In compliance with Motion 103’s approval in Parliament, the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage is studying a “whole-government approach to systemic racism and religious discrimination”, with intent to submit a proposal in 240 days. M-103 named “Islamophobia”, without defining it, as a special case of racism and discrimination. A phobia is an extreme or irrational fear or aversion to something, but the accusation of Islamophobia is often applied to legitimate criticism of Islam in order to silence critics and turn criticism away from Islamic aggression and onto its victims (see https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/10561/youtube-terrorists). In my opinion, it’s rational to be averse to Islam, given the Qur’an’s actual teachings and the prophet’s historic example (see http://m.ncregister.com/blog/edward-pentin/jesuit-scholar-seeking-to-defend-islam-at-all-costs-is-betraying-the-truth#.WVMN2MbMw6h).
You can follow the meetings of the Heritage Committee here: http://www.ourcommons.ca/DocumentViewer/en/42-1/CHPC/meeting-70/minutes. You can make a submission before September 18. For official guidelines for submissions, go to: https://www.ourcommons.ca/About/Guides/brief-e.html.
Wouldn’t it be remarkable if the Heritage Committee found it necessary to protect Canada from the systemic racism and religious discrimination inherent in Islamic ideology? God is full of surprises. Let’s not limit Him with weak faith.
Declare Canada’s righteous foundations – He shall have dominion from sea to sea! – everywhere and frequently. In particular, declare it wherever you celebrate Canada Day. Make July 1, 2017, Dominion Day once again.
Invoke God’s help to keep Canada glorious and free so she will continue to be a blessing to all her citizens and to the nations.
Pray for truth, insight and wisdom to prevail in the Heritage Committee so that Canada will indeed have a good heritage. Consider making a submission.
