Are you listening?

God named Ishmael ‘God hears’ before he was born. Years later, God heard Ishmael’s cry when he was perishing in the wilderness and opened his mother’s eyes to see a spring of water from which she gave him drink – and he lived! Islam claims Ishmael as a spiritual forefather. Today’s

Muslims are in the wilderness perishing and crying out for living water. Let the Church pray to the Father to reveal the well of living water, Jesus, so they might live!
Are you listening?

I am reading a fascinating book called The Challenge of Modernizing Islam – Reformers Speak Out and the Challenges They Face, in which Canadian journalist Christine Douglass-Williams interviews eight reformist or moderate Muslims and reflects on her findings. Her interview subjects are articulate, passionate, well informed critical thinkers. Despite their diversity, all of them believe Islam can be reformed or modernized as a personal faith to be compatible with western democracy, freedoms and human rights. All of them firmly reject sharia in any form in the West. They expose the deceptions Islamists use to soften up the West for sharia, and identify Islamist hiding places in groups like the National Council of Canadian Muslims (formerly CAIR).

But they complain that few are listening. In the Foreword, Dr. Daniel Pipes acknowledges that Islamists attack these moderates and reformers “with words and weapons”, leftists call them “anti-Islamic (a truly choice insult)” and the political right dismisses them as not being true Muslims.

So I was not surprised to read the following statement by dissenting Conservatives in the recently released report of The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage arising from M-103 (the “Anti-Islamophobia” motion):

“One of our greatest concerns was that Liberal MPs consistently failed to treat moderate Muslim witnesses respectfully. They deliberately avoided Muslim witnesses and their personal testimony – much of which testimony was critical of the use of the term ‘Islamophobia’, which spoke to the consequences that a fluid definition would have on public policy, and which addressed potential restrictions on the free speech and beliefs of Muslims and non-Muslims alike.” (p. 92)

As a citizen, I find it frustrating that our government and media are not listening to the clear warnings being given by the people who should know – Muslims who understand sharia and how both violent and stealth Islamists work to bring it into Western societies. As a Christian, I have a deeper concern for the salvation of these truly courageous moderate and reformer Muslims who are clinging to the sinking ship of Islam hoping to save our declining Western culture that has given them the opportunity to be free and to speak out.

But I am listening. Listen with me to what Dr. Tawfik Hamid said when asked to identify a stumbling block to Islamic reform:

“The stumbling block is that Muslims…have a phobia about saying no to sharia. They feel they would go to hell. If you ask them if they want to be like the Taliban, they will say, ‘No, of course not.” It’s like they want sharia as a title for principles [of Islam, which are so holy to them]….The problem for Muslims is they don't have an alternative.” (pp. 87-88)

Silencing criticism of Islam is central to sharia. Muslims are silenced by suppression of critical thinking, while accusations of “Islamophobia” silence non-Muslims.

When John the Baptist sent his disciples to ask if Jesus was “the one”, He answered, “the blind receive their sight…and the deaf hear” (Mt 11:5). After witnessing Jesus doing His Father’s work, people of the Decapolis were astonished and said, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak(Mk 7:37). When Jesus healed a man born blind (revealing the blindness of religious leaders), the blind man said, “One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see” (Jn 9:25). So let’s continue His work.

Jesus, You said we would do greater works than You did while on earth, because You were going to the Father.  Therefore, in Your name, we pray that You would…

  • Open the ears of government leaders and officials to hear whatever truth You are speaking through Muslim reformers and moderates (1 Ti 2:1-6)
  • Remove the veil that keeps the stealth operations of Islamists hidden from sight and open eyes to see
  • Fully open the eyes of Muslims who see partially the failings of Islam and redirect their passion and courage to seeking You and Your Kingdom (Col 1:13)
  • Redirect their mental vigour to plumbing the depths of Your life-giving word (Isa 55:10-11).

By faith we remove the stumbling block (Lev 19:14) of phobia and deception that has kept Muslims chained to sharia. We declare today is the day of Your favour and that the captives are set free in Jesus’ name (Lk 4:18-19)!
